Smudging is concept of giving smokey fire to tree, branches and leaves. Some of old aged people know this concept very well, it was slowly perished after potassium nitrate/paclobutrazol came into existence which will make tree to induce flowers and bear fruits.

Smudging is simple, gather dried material like leaves, branches, peels, husks etc. Identify air movement, burn dried material. With the flow air into you farm smoke will spread to all trees. Or Keep dried material under the tree and slowly start fire the smoke will spread to the tree. If you want more smoke add some green leaves like Neem or Moist organic material.

Best time to do smudging is early morning where air movement is very low and smoke will spread evenly. This need to be done every morning until tree induce with flowers. For Example, Mango trees will start flowering in the months of SEPTEMBER to JANUARY. Start giving holy smoke (smudging ) before the flowering starts. Smudging not only used to induce flowering, but also to control pests and insects. Smudging will regulate uniform and quality of fruits, will maximize the level of production to greater heights.

Some of the farmers experienced too much vegetative growth in tree after smudging process. In addition to the normal shoots coming from terminals, great number of axillary buds appeared on the tree. Ethylene gas is main constituent in smoke. This gas is active agent responsible to induce flowering in tree. Smudging need to be done for at least 2 weeks in order to see results, if nothing seen in 2 weeks need to stop up to one month.

The heat from smoke and co2 gas will make tree to stimulate flowering on the tree. Experiments are unclear which component is responsible for this flower stimulation. But results are often seen successful. Burning lots of material is a big disadvantage and Eco-friendly. So this technique is used with care in order not become a victim of fire accidents in farm. Use smudging pots or smudging trays to carry from one tree to another.

All though it is tedious and laborious work for farmer but results are great. Avoid using chemicals or hormones which induce flowering in trees. Those will create air and soil pollution. Even if trees responds to chemicals in long run trees will get affected with different problems related to flowering and vegetative growth. Smudging is natural and safe process to adopt to induce flowering in trees.
